What is the role of a business leader?

When starting a business, it is often difficult to measure the size and scope of the tasks facing the entrepreneur. Ultimately, what is the role of the entrepreneur? Should they know how to do everything? Must they delegate everything? Like a tightrope walker, it will be necessary to move peacefully along the path to success without falling into the traps of entrepreneurial life. With my many years of experience as a leader and trusted advisor to business leaders, I have a free feeling about the role an entrepreneur should play.

Setting a Course: The Strategic Vision

The entrepreneur must drive the strategy. We are talking about the direction taken by the company. What are the goals? What do we want to do? How do we want to do it? What are our products/services? What is our positioning? Who are our customers?

Although this seems obvious, the precise course is not always defined by the entrepreneur who may say, “I’m trying things… and we’ll see.” Not knowing which direction to go is the best way to get lost, to lose employees, to lose customers and prospects.

Establishing a course is an integral part of the entrepreneur’s role, including developing a clear and achievable business model.

Lead: Organizing Production

Like a conductor, the entrepreneur organizes, coordinates, guides, adds color and tone to the musicians so that the melody is perfect. The conductor has charted their course and knows their musicians. They know the music even though they may not necessarily play all the instruments.

Thus, the head of the company must know their field and control their production. However, it is not necessary for them to be technically capable of executing all tasks, including value-added tasks, highly operational tasks, or support tasks. I am particularly thinking about the need to outsource certain services such as communication, IT, or accounting.

The Entrepreneur as Conductor Federer: Motivating the Crew

Giving meaning to the work of teams has become essential. Few employees stay in the company if they do not thrive there. It is therefore necessary to give meaning to the business project to motivate your teams. This includes:

  • The understanding and commitment of employees to the project, along the established path
  • The trust that employees have in the leader’s ability to reach that point
  • The daily development of the employee, that is to say, the working conditions (material, management, compensation)

Representing: Figurehead of the Company

In a small business, the head of the company is the company. The image they project is the one we have of the society. The entrepreneur is the first exposed to this new reputation. It is therefore essential to create a company that resembles you. Here, we are talking about the values conveyed and passed on. This involves attitude, appearance, verbal language, non-verbal language, etc. Let’s take a few examples:

  • In a dynamic and young company, the entrepreneur is never old and soft.
  • In a company that wants to be modern and focused on new technologies, the entrepreneur cannot just settle for owning the latest smartphone.

The Role of the Entrepreneur: Conclusion

The role of the entrepreneur is not to know how to do everything; on the contrary, they must be able to delegate and surround themselves well. However, they must control their entire environment, and it is up to them to take on their leadership responsibilities. Here you can find a business sheet “companymanager.”
